The test of the 486 is now complete!
This is now a static page describing the outcome of the project (still hosted on the 486, but the counters won't change).

With more than a million hits in just over 48 hours, the 486 has served its purpose. Due to abuse, I have decided to take down the dynamic page. While I am truly thankful for all of the interest, I would have preferered slightly less DDOSing, and wish that I was not stalked, trolled, threatened, and profiled for no apparent reason. I will not mention the group's name directly, though it would not be hard to find, as all they seem to want is publicity. This is why I have hash-marked out some of the referers (many of them have my mom's previous phone number). Here is the source code to the script (everything else used on the 486 was already open source). I was very pleased to see that about 178K hits came over IPv6. The 486 has seen nothing but DDOSs the past 48 hours, which is why it was giving a number of failed requests, though the 486 itself has never died due to the hits. A few times, when changing Lighttpd's configuration, I would get ReiserFS journal write errors and be forced to reboot, but it seems to probably just be from a kernel bug (2.6.26rc8). If my math is right, it averaged out to do 5.5 requests per second in the end, but I am sure it would be higher if it was not so flooded by the DDOS. My router (WRT54GL with OpenWRT Kamakazie) had a harder time keeping up with the load than the 486; I guess NATing can be quite the hog. dnsmasq would die and dropbear would stop responding, so I had to reboot the router occasionally. As you can see, there were quite a few "interesting" referers chosen.

In comparision to the scripted hits, the Digg Effect seemed to be quite minimal (though still quite impressive). I think it is safe to say that a properly configured 40Mhz 486DX with 16MB of RAM is capable of being Dugg or Slashdotted with dynamic content :-). However, telling people that it is a 486 just seems to be advertising for a DDOS. See the original Digg submission, and the one that actually made it to the front page. Thank you all so much!

This page is scripted with the WebLua API, which uses Lua. It uses Lighttpd as a webserver, on top of my Arch Linux fork.
